Updated October 9, 2026. The widely repeated estimate of about $15 million for Richard Montañez is an unverified round number, not a 2026 financial statement. This page will not present it as a current fact.
Montañez is a former Frito-Lay and PepsiCo executive who has said he invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos while working as a janitor. A 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation reported that Frito-Lay developed the product with a team in the Midwest and that the company could not document his version of the origin story. PepsiCo has at times supported his account publicly. The historical dispute is not settled by a net-worth blog.
Any current income would be from speaking, books, and consulting after his corporate career. Those amounts are private.
